New and Interesting Content:
Throughout the creation of this project I was able to explore a topic that is close to my heart. Living in Charlotte for the past year has been amazing, and I have had the chance to build a relationship with the community through the work I do as a teacher. After teaching about American Indians to my 5th grade students I became curious about the local tribes. Growing up in Virginia I learned about different tribes, and now that I am in a new region I felt it is important to learn about the local tribes of my students. The Catawba Indians play a role in the development of the North and South Carolina region, and the future of the community.
Connection to National and State Standards:
This project connects with the following National Common Core Standards:
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.3
Explain the relationships or interactions between two or more individuals, events, ideas, or concepts in a historical, scientific, or technical text based on specific information in the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.6
Analyze multiple accounts of the same event or topic, noting important similarities and differences in the point of view they represent.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RI.5.10
By the end of the year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, at the high end of the grades 4-5 text complexity band independently and proficiently.
This project connects with the following NC State Standards:
5.H.1.1 Evaluate the relationships between European explorers (French, Spanish and English) and American Indian groups, based on accuracy of historical information (beliefs, fears and leadership). 5.H.1.3 Analyze the impact of major conflicts, battles and wars on the development of our nation through Reconstruction.
What I Learned From This Project:
I learned that information can be communicated to students in a variety of ways, and it needs to be in order to meet all students needs. I have never created a website for my students, but after creating this one I know how I can take content from any subject and create an engaging and informative website that my students can use. As a social studies teacher it is our responsibility to push our students beyond the textbook information and apply it to their lives today. The Catawba Indians still are active in our community, and many students are unaware of their impact. I can use this website, and others to open my students eyes to the impact that social studies topics have on their community.
